Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, featuring a significant array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
